A-Z Pests: Rats
How do I know if I have a mouse problem?
Signs of a mouse infestation
If you think you’ve spotted signs of a mice infestation, you’re in the right place. This quick guide to mice will help you determine if it is in fact mice you are dealing with.
Mice leave behind several clear warning signs—whether in a home or a business premises. Recognising these early can help you take action before the infestation becomes severe, preventing costly damage and protecting health and safety.
Droppings
Mouse droppings are one of the most common indicators of an infestation. They are small, black pellets about the size of a grain of rice. Fresh droppings tend to be soft and moist, while older ones are dry. Each mouse can leave behind up to 80 droppings per day, often concentrated in cupboards, along skirting boards, or near food storage areas.
Smell
A strong, unpleasant ammonia-like smell is often associated with mice. This odour comes from frequent urination and tends to be strongest in enclosed spaces such as lofts, kitchens, stockrooms, or under floorboards.
Nests
Mice build nests from shredded paper, fabric, or other soft materials. They usually construct these in hidden, warm areas such as lofts, under floorboards, in wall cavities, or inside airing cupboards. Finding a nest is a clear sign of established mouse activity.
Smear Marks
As mice repeatedly travel along the same routes, they leave behind dark, greasy marks on walls, pipes, or skirting boards. These smear marks are caused by dirt and oils from their fur and are a reliable indicator of frequent movement in a particular area.

5 STEP SOLUTION TO PEST problems
1
INSPECTION
A full environmental assessment identifying: pest infestations, access points, sources of food, water & harbourage, proofing options, and any external factors which could result in pest infestations.
2
EXCLUSION
Rat proofing is carried out where possible by our technicians, any larger proofing jobs will be quoted. Proofing is the best defence. Mice can fit through gaps over 6mm so full proofing is difficult to manage.
3
RESTRICTION
Restricting the sources of food, water and harbourage will make your home less appealing for pests and can be an effective way to prevent re-infestation.
4
DESTRUCTION
This is what it says, exterminating pests that do manage to find their way into your home. Destruction does not necessarily mean rodenticides though, the CRRU risk hierarchy will be used to identify the least harmful options.
5
COMMUNICATION
At every stage of this process our technicians will be communicating their actions and importantly the reasons for their actions.. Technicians’ recommendations should be followed to ensure you have a pest-free home.
Understanding Mouse Biology and Behaviour
Mus Domesticus
Mice are small but highly adaptable rodents, which makes them one of the most common household and commercial pests. They are generally nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night when searching for food and nesting materials. Unlike some pests, mice prefer to eat little and often—feeding on crumbs, leftover food, or any easily accessible food source. This makes kitchens, pantries, storerooms, and catering areas particularly vulnerable.
Mice do not require a separate water source, as they obtain sufficient moisture from their food. This ability allows them to survive in a wide variety of environments, including homes, offices, warehouses, and restaurants.
In ideal conditions, a mouse can live up to 12–18 months, although in the wild their lifespan is often shorter. What makes them especially problematic is their breeding capacity: a single female mouse can produce 5–10 litters per year, with each litter containing 4–8 young. This means one female can give birth to 40 or more offspring annually, leading to a rapid and often hidden infestation.
Because of their fast reproduction, even a small number of mice can quickly escalate into a serious problem. That’s why it’s important to act at the first sign of activity—whether droppings, gnawing, or sightings—to prevent a full-scale infestation in your home or business premises.
